Hayden Panettiere is sharing her truth about the custody of her daughter Kaya.

The actress, 33, appears on this week’s new episode of Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk, opening up to co-hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne Banfield Norris, and guest host Kelly Osbourne about the “very upsetting” experience of relinquishing custody of her only child to ex Wladimir Klitschko.

In a clip from the RTT conversation shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Panettiere calls signing the custody papers the “most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.”

“You thought this was an agreement that you came to that it was best that your daughter be with her dad,” Banfield Norris asks the actress to clarify.

“At first it was not because it wasn’t a discussion,” the actress explains. “If [Klitschko] had come to me and said I think because of where you’re at right now and your struggles that you’re having it would be good for her to be over here with me for a while — which if I had probably had enough of a conversation I would’ve said okay that makes sense, I get it, I’ll come there to visit and stuff like that.”

Hayden Panettiere keeps giving her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson chance after chance — and according to a source, he has no problem taking any handouts she offers.

The former couple dated on and off from 2018, but initially split due to multiple charges of domestic abuse. Hickerson was later sentenced to a month behind bars and ordered to serve four years of probation after allegedly punching Panettiere in the face in July 2020.

Despite their previously rocky romance, the Remember the Titans star has refused to give up on rehabilitating him, igniting rumors of reconciliation after being repeatedly spotted out and about with the 32-year-old.

“She’s happy to loan him cash and wants him to succeed,” an insider dished in the print issue of Star Magazine. “And he’s taking full advantage.”

“Hayden finally accepted that their chemistry always leads to disaster,” the insider noted. “But he’s still hanging in.”

As OK! previously reported, their relationship came to a head when they were involved in a shocking bar fight outside the Sunset Marquis hotel in March. The squabble started inside of the bar and escalated after everyone involved was kicked out by the hotel manager.

“While in the restaurant of the Sunset Marquis, Brian Hickerson, who happened to be with Hayden, made a comment to an individual about leaving the waitress a poor tip,” Panettiere’s rep said in a statement following the altercation.

“That same individual, along with the group he was with, began badgering and shoving Brian, at which point security pushed everyone outside,” the rep continued. “Brian was attacked by the group, as was Hayden, who in her best effort tried to diffuse the situation.”

The duo were confirmed to have parted ways romantically following the bar brawl.

Hayden Panettiere is opening up as she never has before about an abusive relationship in her past — and how she says forgiveness is helping her heal.

“It was a very dark and complicated time in my life,” says Panettiere, whose relationship with Brian Hickerson was on and off for nearly four years. “But a lot of women go through what I went through, and I want people to know it’s OK to ask for help.”

Panettiere, 32, and Hickerson, 33, began dating in 2018 while the actress was in the midst of a painful addiction to alcohol and opioids.

“I wanted to party, I wanted to do everything I wasn’t supposed to do,” recalls Panettiere, who had just come off of six seasons of Nashville. “Acting was my life, but I felt so bad about myself that I lost trust in myself. And that is very detrimental. The idea of not having a responsibility was very appealing at the time.”

In May 2019, following an incident with Panettiere, Hickerson was charged with domestic violence and she was issued a protective order, though the charges were eventually dropped. A few months later, the pair were back together and then in July 2020, Hickerson was arrested on eight domestic violence charges. (In 2021 he pled no contest to two felony counts of injuring a partner — the rest of the charges were dropped — and he spent 13 days in jail.)

Hayden Panettiere has shed some light on her opioid addiction, revealing that it caused her liver to ‘give out’.

The American actress, 32, battled with the addiction in secret for years, admitting that she didn’t even want to see her daughter during her toughest moments.

Hayden – best known for her roles of Claire Bennet on Heroes and Juliette Barnes in the musical drama series Nashville – says her addiction to opioids and alcohol stemmed from being given ‘happy pills’ at the age of 15.

She said someone on her management team would give her the pills prior to walking on red carpets, which made her lively and upbeat during interviews, confessing to having ‘no idea that this was not an appropriate thing.’

Speaking to People, the US star reflected on how her addiction almost cost her her career: ‘I was on top of the world and I ruined it,’ she said.

‘I’d think I hit rock bottom, but then there’s that trap door that opens’, she added, referring also to her postpartum depression after welcoming seven-year-old Kaya.
